Choosing a Pickleball Court

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports for couples, families, seniors, and friends! Pickleball is played on a court similar to a tennis court. While the court material is the exact, court dimensions and net height are different. A pickleball court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide (lines included). The net size is 36” high at the sidelines and 34” tall in the middle. Lines form the court boundaries, lines indicate the non-volley zone (kitchen), and lines divide the right/left service areas. The non-volley zone extends 7 feet from the net on either side.

Pickleball Court Considerations

When choosing a local pickleball court, you may want to consider the following factors:

Quality: Pickleball courts will form cracks and puddling as they wear over time.

Court separation: Since pickleball courts are smaller than tennis courts, many can fit in a designated area. Many courts are separated by PVC pipe dividers, tennis nets, or other homemade barriers. If you are concerned about chasing your ball across courts, look at the partitions used.

Lights: Some pickleball courts offer lighting for playing after dusk

Shading: Many courts are in direct sun, but some provide shaded parts via canopies or surrounding trees

Wind protection: It is challenging to play pickleball in windy conditions. If the court is surrounded by trees or other wind protection, this will help decrease this factor.

Seating: Pickleball players take care of each other! Many courts have furnished outdoor furniture to offer a space to sit for those waiting their turn.

Other equipment: Anything from brooms to sweep the courts, lost and found bins, to AEDS, to squeegees, the equipment offered at courts is endless!

Many pickleball courts are part of existing parks that may offer other amenities such as playgrounds, soccer fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Checking what else is available around the pickleball court will familiarize you with the popularity, busy times, and other options surrounding the court itself.
